With the 2008 season upon us & the visit of Aberystwyth's chopsy youth team (2XI) less than 2 weeks away, Llandovery's preparation for the summer sport has been yet again full of mass enthusiasm. Sadly such enthusiasm looks likely to have dented the chances of Rhys Morgan "PUBE" Davies starting the season after the pleb suffered a knee injury. The Pube flew home from his life as Canada's Mr Common Sense to get treatment to a career threatening joint problem on the NHS, only to find the temptation to "chuck one down" in the nets too much for him. He duly saw his knee buckle on his one & only delivery & is likely to be spectating from the Grandstand with a can of bow on Sunday week.
More bad news for Llandovery is the on-going boardroom saga which is threatening to blight the availability of capten coch Andrew Morton. It is hoped that the situation which is being dealt with internally will be sorted out with haste as Andrew will be looking to arrange the fixtures he'll be available for as he generally spends all his time on holiday these days. Morton even managed to miss the team's regular pre-season rugby larrup weekend due to holidaying commitments.
2008 sees Wyn Lewis accepting responsibility as Captain for the first time after Neil Manning stepped down. Lewis, who has more nicknames than Gladstone Small said " ". The club should also be buoyed by the return of Dafydd "The Daddy" Thomas for the season who will fight it out for the 'keepers gloves with Gareth "Great bat, sh*t batsman" Walters. At the top of the order O.Rhys Davies (who has been asked to take at least three wickets a game or pay the club 200 quid) should continue as opener with captain Lewis doing his usual 6 or bowled pinch hitting role at 3. Emyr Phillips is likely to return later in the season when he runs out of beer money in about late August while Ceitho Annwyl Magi Fel Babi Williams, who won clubman of the year last season is likely to retain a place in the middle order. Elsewhere Ben "The Fury" Jury is out to impress in cricket to make up for his lack of skills with the glug while DJ Rat Davies is said to be "well up for it" in spite of rumours that Jury is "ratting" his younger sister. Jason "I've got pen on my head" Williams is certain to drop a catch somewhere along the line while Aled Salt is sure to drop something else. Youngsters Josh Archer & Josh Arne Riise should get a look in somewhere along the line while Mark "Chocolates" Jones is awaiting clearence from fitness guru Justin Davies to return to playing duties. The club also secured the signatures of Adrian CwmCowthy from Llandeilo, Dai Llansadwrn from Llanwrda & Kiwi gap-student Gerri SiuSiu from College in the off-season.
As officials the club now has three umpires to choose from & it may be bad news for Malcom "Larrup" Page who suffered an injury on the building site recently as Gareth "The Keith" Salt & Sheik Mohammad look to don the white coat & panama.
Finally the club would like to thank the league for giving Llandovery CC just 2 away games in the whole first half of the season & of course the Bear Inn for their continued support.
